Chocolate, a Valentine’s Day essential, is even better when paired with fruit. In the spirit of the holiday, learn how to create delicious chocolate-covered strawberries.
Be the Pro!
There’s no reason to spend a lot of money on chocolate-covered strawberries when they’re surprisingly easy to make from scratch right at home. I will share tips and how to decorate them like a pro! Your family will think you bought these at the chocolate shop!
Smooth and Dip-able
Use a combination of chocolate and shortening to achieve beautiful chocolate-covered strawberries. The melted chocolate will work fine, but adding shortening to the melted chocolate makes for a smoother, more dipable texture.
Chocolate Over Thickening?
With all chocolate, do not overheat it while melting. If chocolate gets too hot, it will burn or become too thick. If the chocolate becomes too thick to work with, add drops of vegetable oil or a small amount of vegetable shortening, not butter or margarine, as it contains water, and stir until it becomes the right consistency.
Start with Dry Berries
Another tip to making chocolate-covered strawberries is that the strawberries must be dry. If you have any water left from rinsing or any bruised areas, the coating doesn’t stick to the strawberry as well. Drops of water can make chocolate seize, that is thicken and become grainy during melting or dipping.
Add Toppings!
You can dip the strawberries in melted chocolate and stop there. They’re delicious plain. If you want to add some variety, gather some toppings that appeal to you.
Nutrition Facts
The nutritional values of a chocolate-covered strawberry will vary depending on the type of chocolate and the size of the berry. An extra-large strawberry has 9 calories. Expect your chocolate-covered berries to have between 115 and 135 calories for a large strawberry.
