Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 pounds (about 7-8 medium) apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 4 Tablespoons water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • 2 Tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Gently rub apples under cold running water.
  • Heat oven to 300°F.
  • In a large bowl, mix apples with water, cinnamon, lemon juice, honey, orange juice, and vanilla until evenly coated.
  • Pour into a 9x13 inch pan and spread out evenly. Cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake in oven for 45 minutes. Remove from oven, uncover, and stir. Put cover back on tightly and bake for another 45 minutes.
  • Remove from oven. Let cool for a few minutes, then mash with a potato masher until chunky. If a smoother consistency is desired, place into a food processor and pulse.
  • Serve warm or cold. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate. Applesauce will keep up to 2 weeks.
  • Tips:
Make a large batch, divide, and freeze to have homemade applesauce all year long!
This recipe can also be made in a slow cooker instead of the oven. Cook on low for 4-6 hours.

Notes

McIntosh, Gala, Fuji, and Cortland apples are recommended for this applesauce, but other varieties or a combination will work as well!
