Private Pesticide Applicators

A Private Pesticide Applicator is an individual eighteen (18) years of age or older who is licensed to apply RESTRICTED USE PESTICIDES (RUP) to their own properties, either owned or leased, or who may apply restricted-use pesticides for other individuals on their properties, owned or leased either for no charge, or as exchange of services, but not for pay, in the production of an agricultural commodity. Applicator classification is not related to either the amount of pesticides applied, or to the amount of acreage treated. 

  • Private Pesticide Applicator Licenses are valid for 5 years.
  • There is no license application fees for Private Applicators.
  • Reciprocal Licenses are not valid for Private Pesticide Applicators.

Licensing Options

Option 1 – Attend Local Private Pesticide Applicator Class

Steps to become certified:

    A) Find a Private Pesticide Applicator Class near you: Class List

    B) Attend class;

    C) Pass administered exam (10 questions multiple choice) and complete application at end of class;

    D) UW Extension will submit completed applications to Wyoming Department of Agriculture for grading of exams and processing of licenses;

    E) It will take at least two weeks to receive your license. You will not be able to purchase RUP’s until you receive your license.

 
Option 2 – Study and Take Exam

The online exam is 50 multiple choice questions, closed book, no electronic devices allowed (including cell phones). 

Steps to take exam:

    A) Study the Core Manual;

    B) Schedule Exam with Local UW Extension Office or Wyoming Department of Agriculture Office in Cheyenne;

    C) Must pass the Private Applicator CORE Exam with 70% or better;

    D) Complete the WDA Private Applicator License Application;

    E) Your proctor will submit your complete application and appropriate paperwork to Wyoming Department of Agriculture.

1001 (PRIVATE) – CORE Exam

This category applies to private applicators using or supervising the use of restricted use pesticides in the production of agricultural commodities as well as grasslands and non-crop agricultural lands. This category also includes private applicators using or supervising the use of restricted use pesticides on animals and in places in which animals are confined.

Required to obtain a private applicator license (applicators are allowed to apply bait for prairie dogs)

 

1003 (PRIVATE) – Sodium Cyanide Predator Control (No on-line Exam available, WDA responsible for training and testing)

Required by private applicators using the M-44 device.

1005 (PRIVATE) – Chemigation (Select commercial 901F – Agriculture Pest – Chemigation exam)

This category applies to private applicators using or supervising the application of restricted use pesticides through an irrigation system.

1006 (PRIVATE) – Aerial (select commercial 912 – Aerial Application exam)

This category applies to private applicators performing aerial applications of restricted use pesticides using a fixed wing or rotary winged aircraft or unmanned aircraft systems.

Applications by plane, helicopter, and drones.

Must purchase from Illinois Extension.

1007 (PRIVATE) – Non-Soil Fumigation (Prairie Dog and Grain Bin Commodity Pests)

This category includes private applicators making soil and non-soil fumigation applications.  The manuals are the labels for Phostoxin and Fumitoxin, applicators should read them prior to taking the exam.  These product labels will also be available during the exam.
