{"id":345,"date":"2013-11-12T15:45:20","date_gmt":"2013-11-12T22:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/uwyoextension.org\/uwnutrition\/?p=345"},"modified":"2024-01-05T11:37:21","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T18:37:21","slug":"november-national-diabetes-month","status":"publish","type":"newsletters","link":"https:\/\/uwyoextension.org\/uwnutrition\/newsletters\/november-national-diabetes-month\/","title":{"rendered":"November:  National Diabetes Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Diabetes affects approximately 9.1% of Wyoming adults, and the cost to Wyoming was approximately $360 million in 2012.\u00a0 When diabetes is in poor control, it can increase an individual\u2019s risk of many complications that affect their quality of life.\u00a0 Some of the most common are heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, eye problems, kidney disease, nerve damage, and non-traumatic lower-limb amputations.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to Watch For<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Research has shown that through better control of blood glucose levels, an individual with diabetes can reduce their risk of complications.\u00a0 What can you do to ensure you maintain the quality of life you choose?\u00a0 Early diagnosis and treatment are key.\u00a0 Know the signs and symptoms of diabetes, such as urinating often, feeling very thirsty, feeling very hungry even though you are eating, extreme fatigue, blurry vision, cuts\/bruises that are slow to heal, weight loss even if you are eating more, tingling, pain, or numbness in hands\/feet.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Progressive<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Remember that diabetes is a progressive disease, and it is important to work with your medical team to adjust your treatment plan as your needs change.\u00a0 Where to go for continued education?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>First, schedule regular appointments with your medical team and request comprehensive diabetes education if this has not already been offered to you;<\/li>\r\n<li>Second, look for resources to educate yourself, such as those offered by the American Diabetes Association (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/\">www.diabetes.org<\/a>), look for community classes that supplement what you receive from the medical community, such as Dining with Diabetes offered by many local Extension offices, and attend local Diabetes Expos;<\/li>\r\n<li>Third,\u00a0 join or start a local diabetes support group;<\/li>\r\n<li>Fourth, advocate for others who have diabetes to improve their quality of life.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Sources:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>\u00a0Diabetes in Wyoming.
