Attended by more than 30 librarians and extension professionals from 18 states representing the Great Plains and Western regions, the meeting focused on actions for further developing a comprehensive web resource on the science, management, and issues related to Western rangelands [rangelandswest.org].

The project is affiliated with the Agriculture Network Information Center (AgNIC), a national initiative to bring a broad range of agriculture-related information to the public through the Web. Support for the meeting was provided by University of Arizona Dean of Libraries, Carla Stoffle; Associate Extension Director, Deborah Young; Director of the School of Natural Resources, Pat Reid, and former Director of the Office of Arid Lands Studies, Ken Foster. Meeting arrangements were made by the University of Arizona’s interdisciplinary team from the Rangeland and Forest Resources Program, the Science-Engineering Library, Cooperative Extension, and the Office of Arid Lands Studies.

Following state-specific reports, discussions were held on content development, peer review procedures, opportunities for funding and collaboration, organizational structure, and technical support.
The results of these discussions were drafted into an Action Plan which is available on the Rangelands West web site. In addition, hands-on workshops were offered to the participants on web site
development, applying metadata, and on content development and web site structure. This gave participants opportunities to gain the skills needed to create their own state rangelands web sites and
experience in populating the regional metadata database.

Also at the meeting, University of Idaho participant, Karen Launchbaugh, announced the successful submission of a Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (WSARE) grant which will
provide partial funding for the Western Rangelands Partnership’s 2004-2006 activities. In addition, special reports were given on the national AgNIC program, the proposed e-Extension initiative, and on related Society for Range Management activities.

On the day preceding the meeting, a workshop demonstrated the RangeView remote sensing applications for rangeland management web resource to 18 participants.

Third Western Regional Rangelands AgNIC Workshop March 18-19, 2004 Tucson, Arizona Workshop Notes Participants University of Alaska, Fairbanks • Norm Harris, Palmer Research Center (tentative) – pfnrh@uaa.alaska.edu University of California, Berkeley • Norma Kobzina, UC Berkeley Library – nkobzina@library.berkeley.edu Colorado State University • Maria Fernandez-Gimenez – gimenez@cnr.colostate.edu • Allison Level, Morgan Library- alevel@manta.library.colostate.edu University of […]

["post-1195","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
